Colour
Although all white bathrooms will still be popular, 2022 is going to see pops of colour everywhere in bathrooms. We're going to see a lot more interesting, unique and even quirky designs and colours.
We can also expect to see some classic colours. White will still have its place in bathrooms as will different shades of blue. Dark Shades like Navy and indigo will produce a very luxurious and elegant look while powdery blue shades will evoke a beach type atmosphere.
On a more fun and quirky note, cotton candy and bubblegum inspired colours will bring a Chic atmosphere to any bathroom.
Just like the predicted trend for kitchens of 2022, we can also expect to see a lot more black in bathrooms. Last year we were seeing a lot of matte black in the fixtures. This year we can expect to see it on the walls and floors. Black pairs very well with gold accents.
2. Twin shower heads
Whenever we get asked to design and build a walk-in shower, the request is always, “ Make it as big as you can.” With these larger walk-in showers, 2022 can expect to see more requests for twin shower heads. These larger showers allow plenty of room for two and with each person having their own shower head, it provides a practical solution while adding symmetry to the room.
You'll want to choose fixtures that contrast with the rest of the decor of the room. For example, matte black fixtures would be gorgeous against white or marbled grey tiles.
3. Shower feature walls
With colour, texture and pattern making its way back into our bathrooms, having a feature wall within a shower can be a real striking focal point within a bathroom. Picture the walls of your shower tiled with 12 x 24 simple tiles. Then picture a chevron design in the middle of the largest wall, framed with a simple black tile. This not only becomes a feature wall, but it lends itself to a piece of artwork within your shower.
4. Bringing the Outdoors in with Wood
Bringing the outdoors in is going to be a 2022 trend for bathrooms just as it is for kitchens. Check out our 2022 Kitchen Trends here.
One of the biggest trends we're going to see in this direction is the use of modern looking porcelain tiles that look like wood. Wood like designs on tiles look great on the walls of showers and tubs and on the floors of bathrooms. This adds a beautiful pattern and a visual illusion in the bathroom. We'll also see a lot more wood vanities, particularly made out of salvaged wood providing a rustic cottage and country feel.
5. Japandi Style
This is a new trend which is a combination of Scandinavian and Japanese styles. It combines the clean, modern and minimalistic style of the Scandinavian bathrooms and blends in some Japanese style elements. This provides an elegant design with a modern touch.
The Japandi style provides sleek, clean lines with calming, neutral colour palettes. Bathrooms will include wood, pebbles and stone, overall creating a Zen atmosphere with lots of texture and interest. You'll also see a variety of wood tones with both curved and straight lines. Bamboo and Rattan furniture with linen furnishings will complete the look.
6. Bedroom / Bathroom Design
Trying to make practical use of the space is a key motivator in this trend. By blurring the border between the bathroom and bedroom, you create an openness within the space. We’re going to see raised platforms, intriguing contemporary shapes, and the use of materials like limestone and wood. This all-in-one trend is all about creating a luminous and sophisticated ambiance in the bathroom with a creative design.
Now this trend is definitely not for everyone. I know some of my clients who would be mortified at the thought of the toilet and shower being in the same space as the bedroom. For those with very little space to create an ensuite bathroom, this provides an interesting solution.
7. Neutral and earthy palette
Just like with the kitchen trends of 2022, the major paint brands’ Colours of the Year are going to play a big role in 2022 bathrooms. Green was the Colour of the Year for three of the big paint brands and we're going to see a lot more green in bathrooms in 2022. We'll also see a lot more earthy tones like terracotta and slate. Overall these colour schemes will create a relaxing, peaceful and comfortable space.
This colour palette also blends nicely with the trend to bring the outdoors in. By using a combination of these colours within the room, you can make use of the pallet in your tiles, wall colour, accessories and furnishings.
8. Wallpaper
Wallpaper started making a comeback a few years ago but we're going to see even more of it in 2022. Wallpaper in a bathroom can be a real statement piece and even a piece of art. You can cover the entire bathroom in it or just create a feature wall behind the vanity. Be creative and bold. Try going out and shopping for your wallpaper first. Find one you just absolutely love and will be a focal point in your bathroom. Now use that for inspiration for selecting your paint colour and tiles. Before you know it, your bathroom will be a showpiece!

Small Bathroom Trends
One single storage unit to store necessities only. Things like hand creams and perfume shouldn't be in the bathroom anyway because the heat and humidity can damage their properties.
Lots of mirrors to make the space look more expansive. Consider shelves on the walls with mirrors behind them. Serves a dual purpose of making the space look larger and providing some much-needed storage space in a small bathroom.
Wall mounted toilets will make the small bathroom look a little larger as well.
Large tiles in light colours will be a hot trend in 2022 small bathrooms
Get rid of the tub and just keep a walk-in shower surrounded by glass.
