Meet Paul Kacaba: The Heart and Craftsmanship Behind Multi Trade Building Services

For over three decades, Paul Kacaba has brought a rare blend of craftsmanship, innovation, and heartfelt dedication to every project at Multi Trade Building Services (MTBS). As the founder, Paul is known not only for his vast expertise in trades like electrical work, plumbing, and carpentry but also for the pride he takes in every detail. We’re talking about a guy who once spent 15 minutes perfectly aligning a light switch cover. Trust us, no detail is too small for Paul’s eagle eyes. His journey started in his father’s workshop, and today, that same commitment to quality and client satisfaction drives everything he does. This is more than just a business for Paul—it’s a passion that he lives out with every project, big or small. Let’s dive into the story of how Paul’s skills, values, and dedication have shaped MTBS into the trusted company it is today.

While other kids played outside, young Paul Kacaba spent hours in his father’s workshop, carefully crafting pieces that required a meticulous eye and patient hands. He fondly remembers building a dollhouse that he donated to Sir Albert Love School—a project he completed with an immense sense of pride. Rumour has it, the dollhouse was so well-made, it’s still standing today—though we can’t confirm whether it’s been flipped on the real estate market yet.

That early passion for detail and craftsmanship set the foundation for his lifelong commitment to quality. Every small part had to be just right to fit together seamlessly, a lesson that carries through to this day in Paul’s work with MTBS. For Paul, each project isn’t just work; it’s a gift for clients to enjoy, much like that first dollhouse he built with others in mind.

The Influence of Family Values

Raised with the motto “do it right or don’t do it at all,” Paul’s father instilled a perfectionist approach in him. It’s a philosophy he carries into MTBS, striving for perfection and settling only for excellence. Paul holds his team to these same high standards, believing that quality isn’t just an option—it’s a necessity. This commitment has become a defining principle at MTBS, one he’s passed on to every employee who joins the team.

A Diverse Skill Set and Unique Expertise

Paul’s career began as an electrician, working on complex projects like the nuclear station at Darlington, where double and triple checks were essential. This rigorous attention to detail shaped his work ethic, requiring absolute precision for safety and durability. From there, Paul expanded his skills, earning certifications in plumbing and eventually mastering carpentry, drywall, and tiling. Frankly, it’s a bit unfair. Most of us struggle to assemble IKEA furniture, and here’s Paul rewiring, re-plumbing, and reimagining entire homes like it’s no big deal.

His journey led to founding MTBS in 1991, where demand quickly grew beyond what one person could handle. When he partnered with Jackie Stezik, she joined the team and brought targeted marketing to the business. MTBS expanded even further, enabling Paul to build an extraordinary team dedicated to delivering the highest quality work.

One project that stands out was a lighting upgrade for a Juno Award-winning musician in a century-old Toronto home. With its original gas piping and knob-and-tube wiring, the home had been through several stages of electrical evolution. Paul’s task was to bring it into the modern era, rewiring the entire system with the latest technology—all while preserving the historic integrity of the house. It was a fascinating look back through time, but also a testament to Paul’s expertise in blending old with new.

Mentorship and Team Growth

As MTBS grew, Paul took on the role of mentor, guiding new talent like Kyle Troll. Kyle was so nervous during the interview process that Paul almost didn’t hire him. Despite initial challenges, Kyle’s confidence blossomed under Paul’s mentorship. Today, Kyle is MTBS’s longest-standing employee, beloved by clients who appreciate his warmth and skill. Watching Kyle’s personal and professional growth has been one of Paul’s proudest accomplishments, showing the incredible potential of the MTBS team.

A Passion for Client Relationships

Paul’s commitment to quality goes beyond the work itself. He genuinely values the trust and loyalty of his clients, finding creative ways to show appreciation. Recently, after completing a kitchen renovation, Paul gifted the clients custom aprons embroidered with “Chef Janice” and “Chef Jim” to celebrate their love for cooking. These thoughtful touches—like sending plants on special occasions or hosting a focaccia pizza workshop for clients—reflect the deep gratitude he feels for those who support his work.

Innovation and Invention

Paul’s inventive spirit drives him to continually improve processes and tools. Recently, while installing a kitchen exhaust fan on a steep slope, he built a custom platform to stabilize his ladder. This experience inspired an idea for a more user-friendly setup, one that could cut down setup time and improve safety in narrow spaces. It’s part of Paul’s never-ending quest to innovate, making his work more efficient and accessible.

A Heart for Animal Rescue

Paul’s compassion extends beyond his work; he’s a devoted advocate for animal rescue through Cuddly Cats Rescue. Many of the cats he helps have been abandoned or mistreated due to illness, yet they offer him unconditional love—something he values deeply. One of Paul’s most memorable rescues was SJ, a cat who, despite losing her eyesight, adapted with incredible resilience. Nicknamed “Zoom Zoom Kaboom” for her spirited movements, SJ quickly mapped out her surroundings, bringing joy to everyone who watched her explore. Her memory remains close to Paul’s heart, reminding him why he continues his efforts for animals in need.

Future Goals and New Ventures

As MTBS looks toward the future, Paul has launched a new division, Small Job Solutions, focused on smaller projects that can still make a significant impact on a home’s comfort and appearance. In addition, he’s working on a book series to empower homeowners with DIY knowledge, starting with The Ultimate DIY Handbook: Master Home Repairs with Confidence, set to launch in January 2025. This new direction reflects Paul’s dedication to helping people create spaces they love, whether through his company’s services or by equipping them to tackle projects on their own.

A Final Message to Future Clients

To those considering MTBS, Paul wants you to know that quality, dedication, and a client-centered approach are at the heart of everything he does. He’s here to bring your vision to life with the highest standards, guided by the same commitment he felt building that first dollhouse in his father’s workshop. With MTBS, you’re not just hiring a renovation team—you’re partnering with a company that genuinely cares about making your renovation dreams a reality. Though, after over 35 years, we’ve had to remind Paul to take a break every now and then. Apparently, perfectionism doesn’t come with an off switch.
