Top 10 Renovation Questions We're Asked All the Time
/Starting a renovation can feel like a leap into the unknown—there’s excitement, a bit of nervousness, and a lot of planning involved! We understand because we’ve helped hundreds of homeowners navigate these waters. Below are the top questions we’re asked about the renovation process, from planning to aftercare, with a few real-life examples to give you a taste of what to expect.
Before You Start Your Renovation
1. How do I start planning a renovation project?
Great question! We always tell clients that successful renovations start with a clear vision. Think about your goals: Are you aiming for more space, updated style, or better functionality? Once you know what you want, set a realistic budget and outline your priorities.
For example, one of our clients, Janice, wanted an open, modern kitchen but was working within a set budget. We helped her prioritize by choosing durable but cost-effective materials and focusing on layout improvements first. This approach kept her project on track without sacrificing her main goals.
2. How long will my renovation take?
Renovation timelines can vary based on the type and scope of work. For instance, a simple bathroom refresh can often be completed in a couple of weeks, while a full kitchen remodel might take six to eight weeks. If you’re looking at a full home renovation, expect it to be several months.
One couple, Jim and Sarah, were eager to get their kitchen done quickly. They wanted to host Thanksgiving dinner, which was about six weeks away. We managed to pull it off by planning carefully, but it required a lot of communication and a few late nights!
3. How do I choose the right contractor?
Choosing the right contractor is essential for a successful project. Look for credentials, experience, and client reviews to find a team that’s not only skilled but also aligns with your vision and values.
For example, Doug, one of our clients and a veterinarian, initially felt overwhelmed by options but knew he needed someone he could trust. After chatting with us and reviewing past projects, he felt confident in our licensed, respectful team. He later told us that the peace of mind was worth every penny!

During the Renovation Process
4. Will my home be a construction zone the whole time?
Not quite! While renovations involve some dust and disruption, we make every effort to keep things contained and respect your living space. We set up dust barriers, lay down protective coverings, and tidy up the work area at the end of each day.
Take our client Peggy, for example. She was initially worried about the impact on her living room while we remodeled her kitchen. We kept everything contained to her kitchen area, and she could still enjoy her space with minimal disruption.
5. What happens if there’s a delay?
Delays are sometimes unavoidable—whether it’s an unexpected wiring issue or a delay with a custom fixture. We keep clients informed every step of the way, explaining any setbacks and adjusting the plan to keep things on track as much as possible.
Once, we were finishing a basement for a client, and a shipment of specialized flooring was delayed. Instead of leaving them in the dark, we offered alternatives that kept their timeline intact. They ended up loving the new flooring, which wasn’t even their original choice!
6. Can I make changes during the renovation?
Of course! It’s very common for changes to happen as the project progresses. Clients will now start to really visualize how the project will look, and changes are inevitable. However, keep in mind that mid-project changes can impact your budget and timeline. We’re flexible and happy to adapt though.
One couple, Jennifer and Paul, decided mid-renovation to add built-in shelves to their bathroom. While this required a slight adjustment to our timeline, they were thrilled with the final result. We love helping clients get exactly what they want, even if it takes a bit more effort.
After the Job is Done
7. What kind of aftercare or maintenance is required?
This depends on your finishes and materials. For example, we recommend special care for painted MDF cabinets and natural wood surfaces, and we even provide guides with maintenance tips to keep your home looking its best.
If we’ve installed quartz countertops in your kitchen or bathroom, each manufacturer has their own guidelines for how to clean and maintain the quartz. We’ll provide with those guides. In the meantime, if you’d like to know how to best maintain quartz, here’s a blog I wrote on the subject: How to Care for Your Quartz Countertop
8. How does your warranty work?
Our warranty covers the materials and workmanship we provide, giving you peace of mind that if any issues arise after the project is completed, you’re in good hands. If you notice something that doesn’t seem right, just give us a call, and we’ll come by to make it right.
Additional Common Questions
9. Can I live in my home during a major renovation?
Absolutely, yes! For a kitchen renovation, we’ve helped clients set up temporary “mini-kitchens” so they can prepare basic meals. For bigger jobs, like full-floor remodels, we still work with you to ensure you can stay in your home the entire time. We respect your space, clean up everyday and ensure there is as little disruption to your daily living as possible.
One client, Olga, stayed in her home during a big basement project. We worked with her to keep noise to a minimum and cleaned up each evening. She was relieved to find it wasn’t nearly as disruptive as she’d imagined.
10. What can I do to prepare my home for a renovation?
Preparing your home can make a big difference. Clearing out the work area, moving valuable items to a safe spot, and making arrangements for pets can all help things run more smoothly.
For instance, one family with three cats arranged for them to stay in another room during construction, which kept them safe and reduced stress for everyone involved.
