35 Years of Renovation Excellence: A Journey of Trust, Craftsmanship, and Connection

35 years of making your renovation dreams a reality!

This year, Multi-Trade Building Services proudly celebrates 35 years of bringing renovation dreams to life. For over three decades, we have transformed houses into homes for countless families across Durham Region and the Clarington area. This milestone is not just a testament to our commitment to quality and craftsmanship, but also to the relationships we’ve built with our clients and the community.

As we reflect on this remarkable journey, we want to share our story—what inspired us, the lessons learned along the way, and the incredible projects and people who have shaped our business.

How It All Began: A Toolbox and a Vision

The roots of Multi-Trade Building Services trace back to 1990, when Paul began his career as a licensed electrician. His natural curiosity and talent for fixing things soon turned into a broader mission: to provide clients with a seamless renovation experience that offered multiple trades under one roof.

In those early days, Paul was often asked by clients, “Do you know anyone who can fix drywall?” or, “Who do you recommend for plumbing repairs?” Paul comes from a family of licensed plumbers, where hands-on craftsmanship was second nature. Together, they built the family cottage from the ground up—a project that taught Paul not just plumbing skills, but a deep appreciation for the art of construction.

These experiences gave him the ability to assist his clients with far more than just electrical work in the early days, setting the foundation for Multi-Trade Building Services to become the one-stop solution it is today. From patching drywall to fixing leaky faucets, Paul quickly became a jack-of-all-trades. Over time, his reputation for quality work grew, and the idea of offering multiple trades under one roof became the foundation of Multi-Trade Building Services.

Fast-forward five years, and Paul added plumbing to his credentials, becoming a dual-licensed tradesman. This unique combination of skills allowed him to tackle a wide range of projects, setting the company apart from others in the industry. However, as skilled as Paul was at renovations, the business side of things—marketing, accounting, and customer communication—presented challenges. Running a business solo was overwhelming.

Everything changed 20 years ago when Jackie joined the team. With her background in sales and marketing, Jackie took over the operational aspects of the company, allowing Paul to focus on his craft. Together, they built a strong foundation that has carried Multi-Trade Building Services through three and a half decades of growth and success. As the years passed and the company grew, each project became a part of the story that defines who we are today.

35 Years of Memorable Projects: Stories That Stay With Us

Every project tells a story, and over 35 years, we’ve been privileged to be part of many remarkable transformations. Some stand out not just for their technical challenges but for the impact they had on the families involved.

From Basement to Bright: Creating a Multi-Generational Haven

One of the most rewarding projects we’ve completed was the transformation of an unfinished basement in Oshawa into a two-bedroom apartment for a multi-generational family. The clients wanted a space where they could live comfortably, without it feeling like a basement, while the daughter, son-in-law and grandchildren could enjoy the main and upper floor.

We took their vision and created a bright, inviting space with white shaker cabinets, quartz countertops, and LED pot lights throughout. Garden doors replaced traditional sliding doors, bringing natural light into the living area and erasing the “basement feel.” The final result was a vibrant, welcoming home that exceeded their expectations.

Here’s what our client had to say after the project was over:

There is no question in my mind that we made the right decision when hiring Multi Trade. I would not only highly recommend them but I would honestly say they are the best company to hire for any project you may have.—Jackie R., Oshawa

A Time Capsule in Toronto

Another memorable project took us to downtown Toronto, where we renovated a century-old home for a Juno Award-winning singer. The house’s history was written in its walls, with original galvanized gas pipes and knob-and-tube wiring dating back to the 1800s. As we updated the home with modern systems, we couldn’t help but marvel at the craftsmanship of a bygone era. This project reminded us of the importance of honouring a home’s history while preparing it for the future.

A Spa-Like Bathroom in a Small Space

Recently, we completed a stunning bathroom renovation in Whitby that turned a cramped 50-square-foot space into a luxurious spa-like retreat. What made this project unique was the client’s crystal-clear vision. He knew exactly what he wanted, from the colour palette to the placement of the shower controls—mounted in glass instead of a wall. It was a first for us, but the results were breathtaking, proving that creativity and precision can elevate even the smallest spaces.

The Evolution of the Renovation Industry: 35 Years of Change

The renovation industry has seen remarkable transformations over the past 35 years. From the materials we use to the technologies that drive our processes, the way we approach home renovations today is worlds apart from when Multi-Trade Building Services first started in 1990.

Design Trends Then and Now

In the late 1980s and early 1990s, renovation trends focused on functionality with a heavy emphasis on bold, sometimes daring aesthetics. Think oak cabinets, floral wallpaper, and pastel bathroom fixtures. Homeowners often prioritized practicality over personalization, with many opting for what was “in style” at the time.

Fast forward to today, and the focus has shifted to customization and timeless design. Open-concept layouts have replaced compartmentalized spaces, neutral tones have overtaken pastels, and sleek, modern finishes have become the standard. Homeowners now want spaces that reflect their unique style while maintaining longevity—something we encourage through timeless renovations. Trendy renovations are like skinny jeans—great in their moment, but you might regret them in 15 years. That’s why we recommend classic designs that never go out of style.

Materials and Sustainability

Thirty-five years ago, materials like laminate countertops and vinyl flooring were king. While durable and cost-effective, they lacked the sophistication of today’s options. Modern renovations emphasize quality materials like quartz countertops, engineered hardwood, and porcelain tiles that combine beauty and durability.

There’s also been a significant shift toward sustainability. Eco-friendly materials and energy-efficient solutions are now widely available and in demand. From reclaimed wood to smart thermostats, today’s renovations allow homeowners to reduce their environmental footprint while improving their living spaces.

The Role of Technology

In the early days, much of the work was done manually, and communication with clients involved face-to-face meetings, handwritten contracts, and plenty of phone calls. Today, technology has streamlined every aspect of our renovation process.

  • Smart Tools and Equipment: Advances in tools and machinery have improved efficiency and precision, allowing for faster, higher-quality work. Laser levels, cordless power tools, and computer-aided design (CAD) software are just a few examples.

  • Digital Communication: Virtual consultations, 3D renderings, and digital project management tools have made it easier to keep clients informed and involved. Even something as simple as Dropbox Sign for contracts or EMTs for payments has drastically simplified the administrative side of the business.

Evolving Client Expectations

Thirty-five years ago, homeowners largely left the design and decision-making to contractors, trusting them to deliver a finished product. Today, clients are more informed and engaged in the process, often coming to the table with Pinterest boards and clear visions for their spaces.

This evolution has been a welcome change. Collaborating with clients who know what they want allows us to deliver highly personalized results. It’s also why communication and transparency have become cornerstones of our business—because informed clients are happy clients.

From Luxury to Necessity

What used to be considered luxurious—like spa-inspired bathrooms, walk-in pantries, and home automation—has now become standard in many modern renovations. Homeowners expect more from their spaces, and the industry has adapted to meet these demands.

Staying Ahead of the Curve

At Multi-Trade Building Services, we’ve embraced these changes while holding onto the values that have guided us from the beginning: quality craftsmanship, honest communication, and building trust with every client. By combining decades of experience with an openness to innovation, we’ve been able to grow and adapt in an ever-evolving industry.

Looking back, it’s incredible to see how far the renovation industry has come. But one thing remains constant—our commitment to making your renovation dreams a reality.

Challenges That Made Us Stronger

Not every project is smooth sailing. Some come with unexpected surprises that test our problem-solving skills and resilience.

One such challenge occurred during a basement bathroom installation in Ashburn. As we broke through the concrete floor, water began pouring in. To our surprise, the house lacked a sump pump—a crucial feature for managing groundwater in rural areas.

We acted quickly, installing a temporary sump pump to prevent flooding. Later, we designed a permanent solution, even incorporating a massive underground boulder into the layout. This project reminded us that flexibility and ingenuity are key to overcoming obstacles in renovations.

Lessons From the Trenches: What 35 Years Have Taught Us

Running a business for three and a half decades teaches you more than just technical skills—it teaches you about people, priorities, and perseverance.

1. Relationships Matter

We’ve learned that renovations are as much about relationships as they are about construction. Every client brings a unique vision, and understanding their needs is key to delivering results they’ll love.

At the same time, we’ve learned that not every project is the right fit. Over the years, we’ve become more selective, ensuring that every partnership is built on trust and mutual respect.

2. Challenges Are Opportunities

From unexpected water leaks to navigating a global pandemic, we’ve faced our share of challenges. Each obstacle has been an opportunity to grow, adapt, and improve the way we do business.

For example, during COVID-19, we reimagined how we connect with clients, moving much of our communication online, and having contracts signed digitally instead of in person. COVID also taught us a lot about patience as supply chain issues caused lengthy delays and increases in costs.

The Client Experience: Going Above and Beyond

At Multi-Trade Building Services, the client experience doesn’t stop at the job site. We prioritize clear communication, regular updates, and personal touches that make our clients feel valued. The greatest compliment is when a client refers a friend or comes back years later for another project. Those moments remind us why we started this journey in the first place.

During COVID-19, when in-person client appreciation events weren’t possible, we started a new tradition of delivering small gifts to our clients’ doorsteps. From Jiffy Pop popcorn to holiday cards and journals, these gestures have become a way to stay connected and show our appreciation.

Client Appreciation: Celebrating Together

Smiling clients dancing and enjoying themselves at a client appreciation event, dressed in formal attire and surrounded by a festive atmosphere.

Over the years, we’ve hosted several client appreciation events, each one a celebration of the relationships that have made our business thrive.

The highlight was a luncheon at the Oshawa Golf Club, where guests enjoyed live music, a barbershop quartet, and dance lessons from Arthur Murray Dance Studio instructors. Seeing everyone on their feet, laughing and dancing, was a testament to the sense of community we’ve built.

Here’s what one of our clients who attended the event said:

The client appreciation event at the golf club was incredible—what a thoughtful way to bring everyone together. Multi-Trade truly goes above and beyond.—Mary S., Whitby

Smaller events, like a pour-painting workshop led by one of our clients, have also been well-received. These gatherings are about more than saying thank you—they’re about creating lasting memories.

Giving Back: Supporting Our Community

As proud residents of Durham Region, we’re committed to giving back to the community that has supported us. One cause that’s especially close to our hearts is animal rescue. A significant portion of our profits is donated to organizations that care for sick, injured, and neglected cats.

Our love for animals extends to our work as well. Whether it’s letting out a client’s dog for a nature call during a renovation or making sure an indoor cat stays safe, we treat pets as part of the family.

Reflections on Resilience: What This Anniversary Means to Us

For us, celebrating 35 years is about resilience, relationships, and staying true to our values. Professionally, it’s a testament to the trust our clients place in us. It’s humbling to think of the thousands of homes we’ve helped transform. Each one has a story, and knowing we’ve played a role in shaping those stories fills us with pride and gratitude. Personally, it’s a source of pride to work for a company that prioritizes integrity and excellence.

Personally, it’s also a reminder of why we started this journey in the first place: to make a difference in people’s lives. Whether it’s creating a dream kitchen, updating a bathroom, or building a family-friendly basement, we’re honoured to play a role in shaping the spaces where life happens.

Balancing a business and personal partnership has its challenges. Work discussions often spill over into evenings or weekends, but we continually strive to find balance. Whether we’re on a leisurely drive or tackling a full workday, our commitment to our clients remains at the forefront.

Looking Ahead: What’s Next for Multi-Trade Building Services

As we celebrate this milestone, we’re also looking to the future. In 2025, we’ll be launching the Love Your Home series of books, starting with a DIY guide to help homeowners tackle small repairs with confidence. This project represents our commitment to sharing the knowledge we’ve gained over 35 years with a broader audience.

We also remain committed to embracing new technologies and trends that enhance the renovation experience. The possibilities are endless, and we’re eager to see what the next chapter holds.

Thank You for 35 Incredible Years

To our clients, employees, and community: thank you. Your trust and support have made this journey possible, and we’re honoured to have been part of your lives and homes.

Here’s to continuing to make renovation dreams a reality for many years to come. Cheers!
