Top Flooring Trends

We’re not really a “trendy” company here at Multi Trade Building Services. We never suggest that our clients do the “in” thing. But we still like to keep on top of the upcoming trends so that our client’s renovation projects don’t look like last year’s renovations.

Going Green

For flooring choices, natural, recycled and materials obtained from sustainable sources are very popular in 2019. Options like cork, bamboo, reclaimed wood and engineered wood are proving to be popular choices. Cork, for instance, is non-toxic and taken from the bark of the cork oak tree. Cork can easily regenerate after every harvest and trees can live up to two centuries. These newable trees can produce a harvest 15 times in their lifetime!

Bathroom Mosaics

White mosaics as well as black and white patterns are very popular right now. You will also see a variety of shapes including subway tiles, herringbone designs and chevron. Another common trend is to use the same type of tile throughout the bathroom but vary the shape and size in the shower walls and floor. For example, a grey marble tie can be used as a 8x16 wall tile in the shower, 2x2 mosaic tile on the floor of the shower and a 12x24 on the floor of a bathroom.

Wood Look Tiles

Tiles that look like hardwood flooring started to become popular a few years ago but never really caught on in residential settings. It was extensively used in commercial outlets, especially restaurants. However, it’s not catching on in residential applications. Light greys and whites are the most popular but they come in many styles and colours and most look incredibly realistic.

The Rustic Look

The look of a rustic farmhouse is making a come back. Homeowners create this look by using longer and wider planks with an emphasis on natural aging and the use of reclaimed materials.

Grey Hardwood Floors

Grey hardwood floors have become synonymous with the modern kitchen look, especially when combined with brushed stainless steel and tinted glass.

Exotic Species

Homeowners these days are looking for more unique flooring. Expect to see a move toward the use of sustainable exotic species, including Brazilian Cherry, Teak, Iroko and Wenge from exotic and tropical areas of the world.

Carpet

Carpet is still a popular selection for its plush feel and warmth. Surprisingly, entryways have become popular spaces for carpet, because they set the tone for a home. Clients are opting to make the entryway as luxurious as a living room or bedroom and are even opting for lighter colours like greys, beiges and whites.

Floor Tiles for Garages

A popular choice for garage floors continues to be tiles — rigid plastic tiles, wood composite tiles, flexible rubber and plastic tiles. Using this type of flooring, as opposed to painting the garage floor, allows home owners to accent their garage with a more personal style.
